Sheepskin Trapper Hat Pale - Garth
Unisex tie trapper hat hand cut and made from European merino sheepskin (or shearling - depending on which side of the Atlantic you hail from).
Garth is a very easy and comfy style to wear, it has a very practical & easy fit, the depth of the hatband is perfect, not too shallow and not too deep - I know that sounds like Goldilocks, but it is so true the depth of the band is such a crucial part of a tie trapper hat !- if is too deep you can't see out and if it's too shallow you are forever thinking the hat is going to fall off or blow away in the wind - but this one is so comfy.
The skin isn't too heavy, it is soft and warm, but not too dense and heavy, so it is perfect for every day, walking the dog and generally cold weather usage. The versatility of this hat and sheepskin means that it is perfect for both men and women in equal measure, in fact - fights could ensue, but OB takes no responsibility for "domestics".
The ties are matching the hat, and quickly retain the earflaps above your head or under the chin.
We have Garth in several colours with a variety of wool finishes, some with curly and some ironed wool and the Brown aviator colour has a slight napalan (leather finish). The napalan might offer a little be more rain resistance, but really the skin is pretty robust - all sheepskin should repel the rain to a fair degree, neither sueded or napalan will be totally waterproof - you need a sou'wester for that!
Merino Curly Sheepskin (Shearling):- The characteristic of curly sheepskins is one of the most natural, essentially, the fleece is left soft and curly as you would find in nature. The wool is dense and warm, giving your winter coat a snuggly cosy feel.
The pelt side can be finished with either sueded or napalan (leather) surface.
Sueded: OB hand select all their skins to ensure that the suede surface is always soft and sensual, with a slight velvet nap on the suede.
Napalan: Is both a protective and a fashion finish, the leather surface can offer more protection against staining and grubbiness.
In our Somerset workshops every skin is painstakingly matched for every coat, by toning with adjoining skins we ensure that the garment is completely consistent in colour and texture all over, matching is a very skilled process, with many years training to perfect, if the matching process is not carried out to the highest standard, a shearling garment can include many multicoloured panels, OB also match the wool side of the coat as well ensuring that when you open it, inside there is a consistency throughout.
